Best/Easiest Gluten Free Lunch – Jason’s Deli

Standard

Jason’s deli might be the best and most respectable establishment for gluten free people. I have been meaning to write about about them on the blog, but since I always go for lunch by the time I get back to work I have a hard time sneaking in a few minutes to write it.

Here it is finally, THANK YOU JASON’S DELI!
Sincerely,
The Gluten Intolerant

To give an amazing example of how awesome they are, I went yesterday with my boy friend 😉 he loves Jason’s Deli. I order the turkey sandwich on gluten free bread, for some reason his order come out and we are waiting for what felt like 10 minutes. My boyfriend refused to eat his food while I was waiting, so I asked one of the servers if he could check on my food.

Turns out, the person who grabbed my gluten-free bread and made my sandwich did not change their gloves before making my sandwich, from the ones he had on from making the gluten filled sandwiches haha. Anyways, they remade my entire sandwich bc they had made that tiny mistake. I was blown away with how strict and understanding that they were for their gluten intolerant clients.

My sandwich was delicious, and gluten-free!

Go support your Jason’s Deli and enjoy a gluten-free yummy sandwich!

Straw Propeller Oatmeal

Standard

It is finally getting cold in Houston. Winter is coming! Haha sorry I couldn’t resist the Game of Thrones reference. Yesterday morning it is cold in the kitchen and I think to myself, oatmeal would be really good right now, too bad I can’t get it. THINK AGAIN!

Thanks to the wonderful gluten-free people of Straw Propeller I can eat oatmeal again for the first time since I was a child! Hot damn it is good. I got the slightly sweetened with maple syrup, it was amazing. They also have a wide variety of different gluten-free oatmeal flavors. You can keep it in the container and take it to go, because let’s be honest, sometimes I push that snooze button on my alarm one to many times.

I am finally feeling normal again after my poisoning from Trail Mix. This product from Straw Propeller was a wonderful return back to living a “normal” gluten-free, healthy life again.

Thank you Straw Propeller for making wonderful oatmeal accessible to those that can’t eat normal oatmeal. Gluten-free is the life for me, so be sure to try this oatmeal!

This is NOT a joke

Gluten Intolerance is for real!

If you don’t believe me, you are welcome to join me on my work trip right now in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

First I need to admit that this is in fact my fault.

I have become so comfortable with trusting “foods” on their “ingredients” that I did not read the food label on the Trail Mix. It was the only trail mix offered at the airport store I went to buy a snack in case of a food emergency on my work trip. As a gluten intolerant person safety snacks are an every day thing, because you never know when something is going to happen and food choices can be limited.

For the last two days I have been sick and putting on a good face to get through my presentation to the board of directors and going to all the different talks at the conference. Right now, I feel like knifes are stabbing into my digestive system. Do you know why? Because I am gluten intolerant, wheat intolerant, whatever! I can’t eat this stuff without this happening to me right now. I was dumb and trusted a simple snack that is nuts, raisins, and chocolate pieces. Feeling horrible and finally able to not fake feeling fine anymore I read the food label on my trail mix: wheat, gluten.

How in the world is there wheat and gluten in this simple snack!?!?

To all you non believers out there, I hate you right now, because you don’t have to read food labels and you don’t have to be skeptical of every food item that you eat. I feel like death because my digestive system is being distorted by trail mix that some how has wheat in it.

To all you gluten haters out there, learn from my mistake. Normally I am super aware and protective of my body and the food I put in it, but I made one mistake and it has made my entire work trip a nightmare for me.

Gluten intolerance is for real.

GLUTEN-FREE FRIED CHICKEN!

Standard

I can’t hold in my excitement! I had GLUTEN-FREE FRIED CHICKEN!!!!

Anyone that has a gluten intolerance understands the sadness of having to give up southern fried chicken, forever. I did cheat once. Before I moved to Houston, I had the best fried chicken in Lubbock just one more time. It was glorious, but hurt after I finished.

Holly Cow! There is such thing as Gluten-Free Fried Chicken. It is like the Greek God of the gluten intolerant. Scratch that, it is the Greek God to the gluten intolerant. I know, I might be a little crazy, but it is Gluten-Free Fried Chicken! Who wouldn’t be crazy?

I found this website called findmeglutenfree.com this website is a life saver! You put in your zip code and it gives you all the places you can eat and drink that offer gluten free options. Then they go even further and have types of food that you can click on that give you the restaurants that offer that food item gluten free. They had GLUTEN-FREE FRIED CHICKEN! I was like, WHHHHAAAATTT? They had 4 places! I swear I will try all of these places. Last night I tried the first one.

Max’s Wine Dive is like a fancy diner, hints the term “dive” in it’s name. They have great upscale wine and wonderful, luxurious comfort foods. They are famous for their Mac and cheese, fried egg sandwich, and fried chicken. I got their fried chicken champagne salad (gluten free). It does take them longer to prepare the meal than it does for other because it is gluten free, but it is so worth it. Seriously, Seriously (my point wasn’t made with only one) it tasted like real fried chicken!

IT TASTED LIKE REAL FRIED CHICKEN!!!

I could critique the other parts of the salad but my only focus was on the gluten-free fried chicken, and it was GLORIOUS! I completely recommend all of the gluten intolerant to go try Max’s Wine Dive in Houston, Texas. One, because it is a really cool restaurant and two, because of the freaking GLUTEN-FREE FRIED CHICKEN.

How can you resist?

GLUTEN-FREE FRIED CHICKEN!!!

That is all.

On the Road

Standard

Traveling is one of the hardest times I have when it comes to eating!

It is November 1st and I am still recovering from the amount of fun I had with my friends in Austin. I had a lot of sugary drinks, candy, and junk food. I also slept on an air mattress. Needless to say I was not feeling 100% before getting back on the road to go back home to Houston.

My saving grace: Chick-fil-a!

Seriously they are the easiest fast food gluten free accommodating restaurants! I got the grilled chicken nugget meal which comes with their amazing waffle fries (I thank God everyday that fries are made from potato) and a lemonade. When you order your food you can tell them that you are “gluten sensitive” so they make sure there I no cross contamination.

Chick-fil-a is the gluten free persons saving grace when it comes to road trips and quick fixes. Thank you Chick-fil-a for your wonderful gluten free grilled chicken option!

Van’s Gluten Free Waffles

Standard

untitled

These are the shit! Pardon my language, but seriously. I love these, I have one almost every day. They taste better than real frozen waffles that do have gluten. Take that Eggo waffles!

You can eat them whatever way you want. My favorite is with some organic self churned peanut butter and half of a banana sliced on top. I also enjoy it plain with butter. Sometimes I try to be fancy and fail at poaching an egg for gluten-free version of eggs Benedict. Instead of that I just lightly fry an egg and place it on the waffle.

My Dad is lightly gluten-free, as in whenever he feels like it. He enjoys using it as bread for like a burger or sandwich. I am too traditional for that. I feel weird using a waffle for a sandwich.Ssomething in my head doesn’t make the connection “that it is all the same” but that is probably because I am not used to eating sandwiches and burgers that are supported by some version of a bread product. Anyways he enjoys it and I am sure other would too.

Go to the store and buy these, I promise you will love them, and soon live by them.

Until next time,

In The Beginning

Standard

I was first diagnosed with a gluten allergy when I was in high school. My mother has always been one to experiment with diets, cleanses, and what not because she had her own health problems. At this point in time my mom was seeing a holistic doctor, which most people are skeptical of, but he changed our lives.

The way he diagnosed is very different from traditional medicine. He had four thin, tall, sealed glass jars filled with different powders. I had no idea what was inside. I had to hold my right arm high in the air, above my head, and pull the collar of my shirt down. Nothing revealing just so the jars could be pressed against my sternum. He would lightly hold my arm in the air, while pressing the different jars onto my chest, and going back and forth between them to double-check. I had to focus on my arm, and use all my strength to keep it in the air. For some reason, I do not know why or how it is possible, for one of the jars I could not keep my arm in the air. It was impossible. The human body is so fascinating. That jar contained gluten, the dropping of my arm indicated that I was allergic.

While in high school and living gluten-free, it was easy. My parents made my lunch for school. I eat almost every meal with them. I did not have to think about my meals or what I was eating because my parents knew what to do, and took care of me. Leaving home and moving to Lubbock, Texas beginning school at Texas Tech University proved to me how challenging life can be gluten-free.

I gave up. I admit it. I was 18 years old, I had no idea what exactly I could, or could not eat since my parents helped me out for so long. I didn’t have a car, so I couldn’t get to grocery store. None of the food on campus was helpful, and no one that worked there even understood what gluten-free meant. I had never had a serious reactions so I gave up. Until, I did start to have serious reactions 3 years later.

My senior year of college I continued to have serious problems and finally realized I needed to start eating the way my body needed me too. I was so blotted and had gained so much weight, and my body refused to drop it, not matter how much I worked out. When I finally became completely gluten-free, the weight came off so much easier. Since I have gone gluten-free, I have become guilt free. I have made this blog to explain what happened to me by becoming gluten-free, and to give advice from my experiences eating at home and out at restaurants. I hope it helps!
